Guanacaste Too Hot? Stay Up in the Nicoya Mountains for Cooler, Less Humid Nights

Short answer

Sleep up the hill and visit the beach by day. Bluesky Lodge sits at 380 m (1,250 ft) in the mountains of Nicoya. In our experience it's often 5°C (9°F) or more cooler than Nicoya town, Liberia or the coast, and much less humid. The beach at Sámara is 45 minutes away.

Why Guanacaste feels so hot

Guanacaste is Costa Rica's dry northwest: low plains, long sunny days and very little rain from December to April. On the coast, the heat comes with sea humidity, and many beach-town rentals depend on air conditioning all night. That's fine for a day at the beach, but it can make the nights hard to enjoy.

What changes up the mountain

It's still the tropics, and it's still warm. But we feel the difference every time we drive down to town:

  • Cooler: often 5°C (9°F) or more cooler than Nicoya town and Liberia, especially in the evening.
  • Less humid than the coast: drier, fresher air that's easier to sleep in.
  • Breeze and open views: the hilltop catches the wind, with a 180° view over the valley.
  • An infinity pool for the hottest hours of the day.

A typical day: beach, then fresh air

  • Morning: coffee on the terrace, sunrise over the mountains.
  • Midday: drive 45 minutes to Sámara's calm beach, or about an hour to Tamarindo. Or spend the hottest hours at the pool.
  • Evening: come back up for sunset, dinner on the terrace and a cooler night far from the coastal humidity.

There's no beach on our mountain, but an incredible view instead, and the beach is an easy drive away. Getting up here takes a 4x4 (or a ride with us from the gate). Read how to get here.

Best time to come if you dislike heat

March and April are the hottest months in Guanacaste. From May, the first rains cool everything down and the hills turn green. Nicoya is also one of the driest parts of Costa Rica in rainy season, so it's a great time to visit. See Costa Rica in rainy season.

Frequently asked questions

Where is it cooler in Guanacaste?+

In the hills. Even a few hundred meters of elevation and a steady breeze make a difference. At Bluesky Lodge (380 m, in the mountains above Nicoya) we usually feel 5°C or more cooler than in Nicoya town, Liberia or on the coast, with noticeably less humidity.

How hot does Guanacaste get?+

Guanacaste is the hottest, driest region of Costa Rica. Afternoons in the lowlands and on the beaches are regularly in the mid-30s °C (mid-90s °F), especially from February to April.

Can I stay in the mountains and still go to the beach?+

Yes. Playa Sámara is 45 minutes from Bluesky Lodge, and Tamarindo is about an hour away. Many guests spend the day at the beach and come back up for a cool, fresh night.
